Teacher of Mechanical/ Manufacturing Engineering

Shrewsbury Colleges Group is a designated Sixth Form College offering Sixth Form College terms and conditions. The college works with 3,600 16-18 year olds, 800 apprentices, 3,500 adult students and 400 higher education students. The college delivers A Levels at two campuses in the town centre, English and Welsh Bridge Campuses, and vocational and technical professional qualifications at the London road campus. As a result of significant growth in student enrolments and with record applications for September 2021, the college has the vacancies below.

Job Purpose

We are currently looking to recruit a Machining Teacher with the ability to deliver across the full range of courses from level 1 - 3. You may currently be working in an Engineering setting looking for your first job in teaching. You will have a passion for innovation, bringing new ideas and embedding new technologies into the learning environment with a drive for achieving excellence.

As part of our expanding Engineering Team you will be responsible for the delivery and development of a variety of courses. You will possess an excellent knowledge and understanding of general Tool Room equipment, such as manual and automated machining processes - Mills, Center Lathes and ideally CNC machines. You must be able to plan and use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques.

Main Responsibilities

  • Teach in the following subject areas -

Manufacturing processes in a mainly practical based teaching environment on City and Guilds and BTEC programmes from level 1 through to level 3

  • Provide an input into a broad range of courses under the guidance of appropriate programme and course tutors.
  • Undertake normal duties with the student learning programmes e.g. preparation and marking, profiling, Records of Achievement, report and reference writing, registration, attendance records, statistical returns and other administrative tasks.
  • Have available up-to-date schemes of work, course files for all courses/classes taught.
  • Set, mark and moderate examinations, assignments and tasks specified by examining bodies and to maintain records and report thereon as required.
  • Attend and participate in course, Faculty, College and other team meetings.
  • Undertake specific College or Faculty roles as required e.g. course tutor, area leader, personal tutor.
  • Assist in the development, planning and organisation of courses and participate in course review, monitoring and evaluation processes.
  • Participate in marketing and promotional activities including liaison with employers and other external bodies as required.
  • Undertake general academic and administrative duties related to the work of the course team and college.
  • Assist in the organisation of work experience placements and monitor and supervise such students as required.
  • Continuously review and evaluate teaching/student learning methods and styles whilst maintaining an awareness of new developments and initiatives in Further Education.
  • Participate in appraisal and staff development based on individual, course and College needs.
  • Undertake individual or team research and consultancy work as agreed by the Principal to be part of current duties.
  • Prepare personal class contact records in consultation with Head of Department.
  • Work flexibly, undertake training and development, and undertake such other tasks as may be required or directed from time to time to meet the needs of the College.

Person Specification

Knowledge
Essential

  • Level 3 qualification in Engineering.
  • Teacher training qualification or be willing to work towards.
  • An awareness of the changing needs of students and changing methods of delivery being brought about by developments in the curriculum

  • A keen interest in flexible and distance learning delivery systems

  • Internal verifiers qualifications

     

    Skills

    Essential

  • A sound knowledge of Tool Room manuafacturing processes to industry standard.
  •  

  • Ability to work in a team and to liaise with other professionals inside and outside the College.

    Desirable

  • Ability to offer other engineering skills such as Electronics, PLC’s, Welding.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to act upon your own initiative

     

    Experience
    Essential

     

  • Previous experience of delivering training to a high standard.
  • Good industry knowledge and experience in a welding environment.

     

    Desirable

  • Skills and knowledge of fabrication processes and techniques.
  • Working with employers to develop programmes to meet their requirements.

     

    Special Working Requirements

  • Ability to travel to meet with employers, undertake CPD and any other duties associated with the role.
  • Flexible working to accommodate training outside of traditional terms times and days with suitable notice.

 

We are looking for a qualified teacher or somebody with relevant experience willing to study for the teaching qualification which will be fully funded and delivered by the college.
